How To Combine Modern Furniture With Minimalist Interior Design?

Modern furniture and minimalist interior design go hand-in-hand in urban spaces. Design trends will come and go, but minimalism never loses favor. This is especially the case with people residing in apartments, townhouses and smaller sized homes.

How does minimalism fit in with interior design?

When it comes to home décor, minimalism focuses on avoiding decorative or impractical furnishings. Every piece is cohesive, logical and functional. Some examples of how you can incorporate minimalism into your space are:
  • built-in appliances
  • Neutral colors on walls such as grey, white, black and brown
  • Large windows with several light sources
  • Multi-purpose furniture
  • No clutter or excessive embellishments
Combining modern furnishings with simple interior design can give the appearance of space and depth. The key is selecting the right pieces of furniture to make your home comfortable and unified.

How do you combine modern furniture with minimalist design?

1.  Sofas:

While selecting a suitable sofa, opt for solid shades but no patterns. There should be a strong focus on strong design, not excess design. Your sofa should clearly display lines and shapes.

Modern sofas are also multi-functional. Some are like sectionals and have a pull out or ottoman feature. Such sofas maximize space and provide several functions, i.e. seating, sleeping, table top, etc. Many sofas also have built-in storage to help maximize storage and reduce clutter.

2. Tables:

In small apartments, a kitchen island, bar or cafe table can serve as a dining table. In the case of using an island, simply place bar stools for seating. You can still install a small dining table that seats two but also leaves which prop to accommodate two extra diners. For a design twist, consider using an ottoman with a large, flat tray on top and place a few poufs around it for seating during meal times.

3.  Chairs:

In modern design, you don’t have to purchase furniture sets. In fact, mixing it up achieves a better design. For example, consider placing modern club chairs, an ottoman, poufs, stools and occasional chairs. Create a mixture of different types of seating but keep one unifying theme within each type of chair. This can be the color, the material, the design, etc. Avoid mixing wood and metal as this is not recommended in minimalist or modern design.

4.  Beds:

Having a minimalist design concept in your bedroom can actually help you achieve better sleep. Always opt for neutral shades and soft materials, as these encourage the mind to relax. Ensure there is ample closet and storage space without taking up too much floor space. For example, you can opt for a bed with storage underneath. Choose a single armoire and dresser but ensure these are off-the-floor or leggy. The more floor space you can see, the bigger your bedroom will appear. Opt for a simple nightstand that is hung on the wall. Don’t forget to include multiple lighting choices.
