Your Style Guide To Choosing Dining Room Tables

The dining room is more than a place to share meals. It is an area where many family discussions occur and where many holidays, birthdays and anniversaries will be celebrated.

Considering all the important activities that will take place here, the dining room is a prominent space in the home, especially the table.

After your sofa set, the dining room furniture will be your next most expensive purchase, so you need to buy the best one. The table style you purchase will reflect on your family’s needs, the design and décor style and of course, budget.

Listed below are five dining room table styles that you should consider:

Traditional Oval:

This type of dining table is both beautiful and classic. Usually made from cherry or mahogany, it is a type of furniture item that is passed from generation to generation. You can easily find an antique version of this style at an estate sale or auction, but if you want something new, buying it from a furniture store is your best option. The benefit of investing in a newer piece is that the table is usually adjustable, making it a practical addition to your home.

Pedestal:

With this style of dining table, there are no legs, just one central column or pedestal in the centre. Pedestal dining tables are constructed from marble or traditional wood. This design has been around throughout antiquity and is making a comeback once again. The modern pedestal table has a glass surface supported by an all wood or metal base.

Rustic-Modern:

This type of table has grown in popularity in the last decade. It features a modern and streamlined design, usually in a rectangular shape. The table has a country feel to it. It is inclined towards worn, rough-hewn woods and natural material like slate.

Trestle:

Trestle-style dining tables are made using two or more brackets in the table base. A long, flat piece comprises the table’s surface. This is an informal style table, perfect for casual entertaining.

Farmhouse:

This style is rustic and relaxed, actually found in most farmhouse kitchens. Constructed from pine and stained in dark tones, these tables have a very comfortable feeling to them. One side of the table consists of chairs while the other side features a bench-style seating arrangement.

How To Identify Quality, Wood Furniture?

Solid wood furniture provides natural beauty and enduring value to any space that it adorns. Quality, wood furniture has the ability to last for several generations. It can be easily incorporated into any design style. Unfortunately, there are too many imitation wood products out there, so it’s easy to be misled into purchasing the wrong type of furniture. Imitation wood furniture does cost less but it won’t last for much long. If you are truly interested in purchasing an enduring piece, you must inspect your wood furniture to ensure you are in fact getting value for the amount of money you’re going to spend.

Modern Furniture

The following tips will help you identify quality, wood furniture:

1.  Carefully examine the way the pieces of wood are attached. If you notice dovetail joints, it is a sign of quality construction. Dovetail joints are the mainstay of good drawer construction. They ensure that your drawers will continue to open and close for many years to come.

2.  Have a look at the affixing. In solid hardwood modern furniture construction, several pieces of wood are glued together in an end-to-end or edge-to-edge way with continuous glue markings in between. Place your finger on top of this glue and follow it across the surface to the underside. If this line disappears, it is unlikely this is real hardwood.

3.  Take the chairs and flip them upside down. Examine the joints to ensure they are snuggly fitted and free from excess filler or glue. The joints should be reinforced with nails or screws. The back-and-leg and arm-and-leg components must be made from a single wood piece not bits of wood.

4. Beware of deceiving terms like “cherry finish”, “real wood”, and “high-quality plywood”. These do NOT mean you have a piece of genuine wood furniture. For example, a study table might look like it’s made from cherry wood and have the terms “cherry finish” written on the packaging, but it doesn’t mean its actual cherry. “Cherry finish” refers to the color and not the actual wood.

Before investing in any kind of wood furniture, closely examine its individual component. For more furniture tips, visit Creative Furniture Store today.
